Over 5m jobs to be created in waste sector in 2025
The Founding Chairman, National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria (NASWDEN), Alhaji Suleiman Lateef, said over five million jobs would be created in the scrap/waste sector in 2025
Lateef made this known diring the inauguration of a Caretaker Committee for the association on Friday in Abuja.
According to Lateef, who is also a Founding Chairman of Board of Trustee (BOT), the association plays significant roles in contributing to the development of the country.
"We educate our members on their role as employers of labour in the country. We have created about ten million jobs, but we aim to make it 15 million before the end of this year.
"Our members are law abiding. They do not encourage vandalism. This because, we have a disciplinary Committee that deals with any of our members that involves in vandalism. We say no to vandalism.
"Meanwbile, the newly inaugurated Committee are to usher us into the delegate conference later this year.
"Also, we have also written to aggrived members to come and join the progressive journey of the association. We don't want to sideline anybody," Lateef stressed.
Also speaking, the BOT deputy chairman, Mr Edward Ella, reiterated that members of the association do not encourage miscreant to vandalise properties and bring to them.
"We are dealers in scraps and supply to end users or companies that deals in recycling of iron rods and steel materials.
"There is no member of NASWDEN that involves in vandalism, rather we create jobs to boost the economy" Ella said.
Also, the NASWDEN Founding Father Secretary, Mr Stephen Obayuwana, appreciated the Minister of Labour and Productivity for his role in stabilising the association.
He listed the committee members as, Ibrahim Soja,Salisu Ibrahim, Awal Ahmed, Yakubu Suleiman, Okon Owadofia, Kelechi Ogugua, Uche Idengba and others, are expected to usher in new leadership for the association.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the inaugurated Committee, Owadofia, said he would try his best to checkmate vandalism and sanitise the scrap and waste business.
"This is a multi-billion naira sector which has and is contributing greatly to the economy of the country.
"We are the main suppliers to all the rolling mills companies in Nigeria, especially in Lagos, Kano, Ikurudu and other cities.
"My tenure will be short, but we will also focus our energy on checkmating vandalism," he stressed.
