2027: PDP moves to woo Peter Obi back

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its desire to bring back former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to its fold ahead of the 2027 elections, describing him as a “great political capital” that would benefit any party lucky to have him.
This was disclosed by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
Speaking on Obi’s impact during the 2023 elections, Abdullahi admitted that the PDP had underestimated the former Anambra State Governor, acknowledging that his eventual performance took many by surprise.
“Peter Obi is our product, and the PDP indeed wants to get him back. He is a very great capital for any political party, and any political party that will have him will be to their advantage,” Abdullahi said.
He went on to acknowledge the impact Obi had in the last election, saying, “The truth of the matter is, if he had not gone the way he did… and still generated over six million votes in spite of the rigging and frustration, Peter Obi is truly a political capital, no doubt about it.”
Although Obi has continued to affirm loyalty to the Labour Party (LP), where he ran as the party’s flag bearer in 2023, he has also shown willingness to explore broader political alliances. Notably, the former governor is currently involved in a fresh opposition merger being midwifed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a possible realignment ahead of the next polls.
Interestingly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who flew the PDP’s presidential flag in 2019 and 2023, has also announced his defection from the party to join the ADC-led coalition. His move marks a major shift within the opposition bloc and adds further uncertainty to the PDP’s future direction.
Peter Obi, who was once a running mate to Atiku under the PDP in 2019, left the party in the buildup to the 2023 general election to pursue his presidential ambition under the LP. His campaign soon grew into a movement that shook Nigeria’s political space, with Obi securing over six million votes and winning twelve states, including the Federal Capital Territory, to finish third in the race.
